Huawei Mate 10 – The Monster Of A Mobile Phone

As a men’s fashion editor and content curator, the need for a high performing and aesthetically appealing powerhouse of a mobile phone is immense. Huawei’s latest mobile offering, the Mate 10 – specifically the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 – the new monster of a mobile device just met that need.

Launched last October and designed with Porsche Design Studios, the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 (“PD Mate 10” or “Mate 10”) is a veritable offering. I have had two iPhones for the past couple years. Yes, I carry two phones around. As for “Why?” my answer is simple: I have lots of work to do that require a reliable device and when one doesn’t do the job, you need two. No, I do not sell drugs, unless of course, you count the libidinal and narcotic effect of viewing and shopping for men’s fashion a phsyco-connect addiction. All jokes aside, having a phone (or phones) that satisfy both my professional and personal needs is imperative, and the PD Mate 10 rises beyond a tease.

Leica Dual Camera

My first and most prominent intrigue is the camera. Co-engineered with Leica, the phone’s camera is incredible, capturing professional grade photography with little effort. Armed with the world’s largest f/1.6 aperture dual lenses in the phone’s Leica Dual Camera, along with Huawei’s Artificial Intelligence features (which I will speak about later), the camera enables one to capture state-of-the-art photography with little effort. From identifying different scenes in real time – be it the environment, object and/or subject – to automatically adjusting settings, picture-perfect portraits and selfies are made easy. I had a few photographers test it out and everyone was impressed. More than impressed, they didn’t want to give back the phone. Anyone who knows me knows I take a million photos (not all selfies) and seriously… the camera is amazing!

Dual SIM

As for carrying around two phones, it has not been convenient but it gets the work done. Every time I travel to a new city for work I find myself needing a local number. Since I have a single SIM phone, this presents a need for another device. One iPhone doesn’t allow for me to have both my permanent number and a temporary SIM on at the same time. This is not the case with the PD Mate 10 however; it offers the convenience of a dual SIM. Its dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) capability is a major convenience and the functionality around call handling, data usage and messages is intuitive. Certainly, this feature is my second intrigue.

Battery Life

When I first tested the PD Mate 10, I had one of my iPhones charged up and on the go for most of the day. By the close of business, my iPhone was almost on “E” and the PD Mate 10 boasted 65%. I even used the phone more than the iPhone. The PD Mate 10’s high performing battery is my third intrigue. The phone’s 4000mAh battery is armed with a smart battery management system that learns from the user’s behaviour and intelligently allocates resources to avoid power-wastage and maximize battery life. Superb! Further, it has an intelligent Neural Processing Unit that manages power consumption and resource allocation depending on what the phone is used for. And to top it off, Huawei’s SuperCharge technology enables a 20-minute charge to supply battery power for an entire day. I have not seen another phone with a battery life like this before and the SuperCharge just sweetens the experience.

Huawei’s Artificial Intelligence (AI)

I was only going to talk about my top three intriguing things about the PD Mate 10 but I couldn’t keep mum about the phone’s artificial intelligence (AI). It’s that good, and the notes couldn’t have said it better “Huawei’s artificial intelligence (AI) herald the dawn of an exciting new era for mobile phones.” An era where tons of time tinkering toward the terrific is saved. The smartphone’s built-in AI demonstrates intelligence in a number of ways and enables increased efficiency and greater performance. It allows the phone to be adaptive, fast, and smart – understanding and responding to real-world conditions instantly. Apart from powering performance in the phone’s camera and battery life (mentioned earlier), the phone’s AI fuels a pre-installed real-time translator that instantly translates text, voice, conversations, and images into 50+ languages across devices. For someone who travels, this is gold. For someone looking to be efficient, this is powerful.

I first encountered Porsche Design in 2012 when they opened a flagship store in Soho, New York. At that time I knew the vehicles and what the brand stood for in terms of luxury but at the store, I was introduced to their unique take on design for apparel and accessories. Back then, every product I was introduced to was immersed in taste, performance and precision. Today that tradition continues with their partnership with Huawei for the PD Mate 10. Boasting all the aforementioned features and more – that intrigues not only me but everyone I’ve spoken to – the Porsche Design HUAWEI Mate 10 is distinct in a Diamond Black colour and ergonomically ensconced. I am happy to be an owner of this bad boy and if you are interested in a mobile device that boasts convenience, efficiency, style and performance, the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 10 might just be for you.
