Being a Caribbean boy, there are terms you grow up knowing. One such term is yardie, which is derived from Jamaican patois and means home or “yard”, or refers to a Jamaican criminal. “Yardie,” is also the name of the first film Idris Elba is directing, which shoots on location in London and Jamaica.
Ubiquitously used across the West Indies in varied contexts, you might have also heard the term in calypso, dancehall, reggae and soca tracks. Given its deep connection to the homefront, I designed a tee in 2016, for Sagaboi’s fashion collab and the prototype was delivered in Milan, just when I needed a white t-shirt to finish a look for Milan Fashion Week.
Pairing it with one of my favourite designer’s, Andrea Pompilio, was a no-brainer and the ‘ting’ came together so nicely for the men’s fashion madness in Milan. See a few captures by the Boy from Dagbon.
