60 YEARS ON THE ROAD
For sixty years, the Caribbean has transformed the streets of West London. This scarf is a map of that journey steelpan, sound system, mas, migration, our forefathers and foremothers, all colliding in one square.
Made in two ways. A silk edition, made to keep. A cotton edition, made for exactly what it says: for the Road.
SIXTY YEARS OF NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL
In 1959, Trinidad-born activist and journalist Claudia Jones helped stage a Caribbean Carnival at St Pancras Town Hall, created in the aftermath of racist violence in Notting Hill, using music, dance and Carnival as expressions of Caribbean culture, community and resistance in Britain.
In 1966, community activist Rhaune Laslett organised a children's street party in Notting Hill. Among those she invited was Trinidadian musician Russell Henderson and his steelband. The band put their pans around their necks and moved through the streets. People came out of their homes. They followed. They danced. The road had begun.
Sixty years later, Notting Hill Carnival is Europe's largest street festival and one of the world's great cultural events... a living expression of Caribbean culture built by generations of mas makers, pan players, musicians, and community.
Sagaboi created 60 Years on the Road to mark this anniversary — a wearable map of that history, available as a silk edition to keep, and a cotton edition made for the Road itself
